Frequently asked questions F.A.Q.

How is Livinguard's mask different from any other antiviral mask?

Other non Livinguard masks claim to be antiviral and rely on chemicals such as benzalkonium chloride or metal based technologies such as silver, copper or zinc. Known as releasing or “leaching” technologies they are not permanently bound to the textile surface and can therefore rub off on skin, or more worryingly, be inhaled or swallowed. In addition these non durable technologies find their way into ground, sediment and surface water causing harm to the environment and aquatic life. The key “killing” component is a “chemical” force, which has the potential to force bacteria resistance and reduce benefits.

Livinguard Technology is based on polycationic technology using mechanical action to destroy viruses and bacteria and does not use any of the above referenced biocides nor work in a comparable manner. Livinguard Technology is a non-releasing technology (non leaching), which is great news for humans AND the environment, and has been tested for dermal toxicity and skin irritation.
Each square cm of a livinguard mask has about 7.1017 (700,000,000,000,000,000) positive charges to inactivate negatively charged viruses and bacteria.

?
Do we really kill viruses?

Livinguard has two primary technology platforms: Livinguard Antiviral Technology and Livinguard Antibacterial Technology. They are differentiated based on the concentration and power of the charges. The Antiviral Technology is more powerful in order to tackle smaller viruses, and is also effective against bacteria.

Livinguard Antiviral Technology has been successfully tested over the course of 5 years across different applications. Testing by the Swiss Federal Institute for NBC Protection and NSF International, among other labs, has shown inactivation of Influenza A Virus, Yellow Fever Virus, Rota Virus, Polio Virus, MS2 phage, and FR coliphage. Antiviral performance is >99.9% on average and even up to >99.9999% in some cases, with unparalleled speed of inactivation, as well as durability

?
Is this tested by any reputable bodies?

Several facets of our technologies and products have been successfully tested extensively by a variety of international laboratories. These include the Swiss Federal Institute of NBC Protection, TÜV Sud, TÜV Rheinland, NSF International, Swiss Quality Testing Services, Product Safety Laboratories in New York, Department of Environmental Science at the University of Arizona, International Down & Feather Laboratory, and many others. It is currently under application with the US Environmental Protection Agency as the world’s first self-disinfecting textile technology.

What is the difference between filter and valve?

We often notice that the terms "filter" and "valve" lead to misunderstandings and confusion. These are two completely different product features.

To explain: All models of the Facemask Pro have a filter. The filter is located between the two layers of antiviral cotton. The filter material, which is made of polypropylene and is usually used in FFP2 technology, ensures that viruses and bacteria are stopped. As a result, the pathogens are trapped between the two polycationically charged cotton layers and are destroyed by their positive charges.

In addition, we also offer the Facemask Pro with a valve (these masks also have a filter). The valve is a pure exhalation valve. This means that as soon as you breathe in air, the negative pressure closes a membrane inside the valve, so that no unfiltered air can enter. However, when you exhale, the membrane is pressed outwards and your unfiltered exhaled air can be released through air slits in the valve. This means that your warm exhaled air cannot accumulate under the mask, making it a little cooler/airier and therefore more comfortable to wear. However, there is the disadvantage that through this valve your exhaled air is also released unfiltered, and therefore the level of protection for those around you is no longer as high. So if you yourself are already ill, there is a risk that you will release germs through the valve and thus possibly infect someone else. However, the level of self-protection for wearers of the valve mask is just as high as the non-valve mask.

The Face Mask Street doesn't have a filter or a valve.

?
What is the advantage over silver ion technology?

Some masks use silver ion technology to eliminate bacteria. Their antiviral efficacy is low and unfortunately not sufficient in the current crisis. Silver ion technology and similar technologies using zinc or copper can detach themselves from the fabric fibres and cause health problems if inhaled. For this reason, some products with silver ions are not approved for use in Europe.

?
What materials are used?

The face mask Pro consists of three layers. The inner and outer layers are made of 100% cotton with antiviral and antibacterial Livinguard technology. Between these two layers is a filter medium. The filter medium consists of 100% polypropylene. On the outside there are rubber bands with an adjustment aid. Together with the nose clip, the mask can be optimally adapted to the shape of the face. A positive side effect for spectacle wearers: fogging of the lenses is prevented.

The Street face mask consists of two layers. The inner and outer layers are made of 100% cotton with antiviral and antibacterial Livinguard technology. On the outside there are elastic bands with an adjustment aid. Together with the nose clip, the mask can be optimally adjusted to the shape of the face. A positive side effect for spectacle wearers: fogging of the lenses is prevented.

The Fitness face mask is made of particularly tightly woven bamboo microfibre.

?
Can I breathe easily through the mask?

The Facemask Pro is available in two versions, with and without valve. Both masks allow for comfortable inhalation and exhalation. The Facemask Pro with valve also allows air to escape "unfiltered" through the valve during exhalation, which makes exhaling even easier. Our Facemask Pro is made of high-quality materials so that it can be worn comfortably at work.

Our Face Mask Street doesn't have a valve, because it's thinner than the Face Mask Pro and therefore already allows for more comfortable breathing. Its filtering level is lower than that of the Face Mask Pro.

?
How does the technology works?

The Face Mask Pro consists of three different layers: the inner and outer layers are made of cotton. Using the patented Livinguard technology, the cotton fabric is covered with a polycationic coating, which has a positive electrical charge. Between these two cotton layers there is a filter made of 100% polypropylene. The filter is there to stop the viruses and bacteria and trap them between the two antiviral cotton layers so they can be destroyed. Viruses and bacteria have a negatively-charged surface, which makes them bind to the positively-charged cotton fabric. This bind breaks the surface of the viruses and bacteria, rendering them unable to infect. This method has been proven to be effective against a wide range of microorganisms, including both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, viruses and fungi. Our Face Mask Street consists of only two layers of Livinguard antiviral fabric and does not have a filter. The Livinguard technology works in the same way as it does with our Face Mask Pro, but it has a lower filtration level, which allows for easier breathing. The Face Mask Street is not a medical device.

?
Does the mask protects against Coronavirus?

The Livinguard masks are made of a fabric treated with the Livinguard method. Scientific studies have shown that this fabric can deactivate 99.99% of SARS-CoV-2. The fabric’s antiviral effect is preserved even after using and washing the mask repeatedly (if used and washed following the instructions).

However, using a Livinguard mask does not substitute any personal hygiene measures recommended by authorities. The mask cannot prevent an infection if it is not worn or if the virus enters the respiratory tract by other means, such as touching one’s face with contaminated hands.

?
From which point should I count the lifespan of my mask?

The recommended 210-day lifespan of the Face Mask Pro (and STREET) begins once the mask has been worn. Tests have shown that the Livinguard antiviral fabric technology remains active after 30 washes, if washed weekly (every 7 days). Therefore, we recommend a usage period of 210 days, 30 washes. The product's 210-day lifespan cannot be extended by washing it less or wearing it for shorter periods.

?
How often should I wash my mask or gloves?

The Face Mask Pro and Livinguard gloves are treated with a unique antiviral coating that deactivates viruses and bacteria. They only have to be washed if they have visible stains. If you use the mask daily and extensively, we recommend washing it once a week with cold water (See: “How should I wash my mask or gloves?”)

?
How should I wash my mask or gloves?

If used daily, wash once a week, by hand, using cold water (below 40 degrees) and leave to dry in the shade. Do not wring or stretch the mask or gloves. Do not use bleach or laundry detergent. Do not put it in the washing machine, oven, microwave or dryer. Do not dry-clean. Reusable for up to 30 washes. Thanks to their antimicrobial coating, the mask and gloves remain pathogen-free, so heat isn't needed to disinfect them. Applying heat would only damage the filter inside the mask.

?
How do I know which size do I need?

We recommend children between 7-10 years old to wear size S. Generally, for children from 10 and for women we recommend size M and for men we recommend size L. Please note, however, that each face and head shape is different. If you are unsure about what size to choose, we recommend ordering size L, as it can be adjusted with the ear straps.

Face masks are highly sensitive hygiene products. They can therefore not be returned or changed once the packaging has been opened.

Dimensions of the face mask Pro:

Size S: 13 x 16 x 0,5 cm

Size M: 14 x 17 x 0,5 cm

Size L: 15 x 18 x 0,5 cm

Can wearing the mask make me inhale harmful substances?

1. PHMB is a polymer. The name PHMB can refer to several different molecules, as it hasn’t been standardised by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

2. The PHMB used by Livinguard is not

classified as carcinogenic, nor as Carc. 2, H351.

3. The mask contains less than 0.1% of PHMB. According to the GHS this figure does not have to be included in the product’s safety document.

4. PHMB is authorised by ECHA for use in PT 2 products, which include "textiles, tissues, masks, paints and other articles or materials with the purpose of producing treated articles with disinfecting properties”.

5. It has been proven that breathing through the Livinguard mask does not release PHMB from the fabric, so there is no risk of inhaling it.

?
What is the difference between the Pro mask and the Street mask?

The Face Mask Pro offers the highest level of protection thanks to its three layers. The layers are indicated on the plastic packaging and on the label sewn inside the mask, next to the size. The layers are:

- Outer 100% Cotton
- Middle 100% polypropylene
- Inner 100% Cotton

The Face Mask Street is made of only two layers of the patented Livinguard cotton fabric. This makes it more breathable than the Face Mask Pro, but its filtering capacity is lower.
